Fayette is a city in Jefferson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,614 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County.
Fayette is located at 31°42′40″N 91°3′44″W (31.711144, -91.062246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,242 people, 775 households, and 543 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,903.3 people per square mile (733.6/km²). There were 843 housing units at an average density of 715.6 per square mile (275.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 1.92% White, 97.37% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.22% Asian, and 0.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.
There were 775 households out of which 39.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.4% were married couples living together, 40.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.46.
